Essential Tips for Proper Contact Lens Hygiene
Share
Contact lenses provide clear vision for millions. But improper care can lead to discomfort, potential infections or damage. According to experts, following basic contact lens hygiene is crucial. Here we explore key best practices to keep your eyes happy and lenses safe based on common recommendations.
Don't Use Saliva to Wet Lenses
It may seem convenient to use spit to re-wet your lenses. But doctors strongly advise against it due to bacteria and enzymes in saliva that could scratch the lens surface or cause tissue irritation.
Don’t Use Damaged, Torn or Loose-Fitting Lenses
Inspect lenses frequently for cracks, tears or other defects which can injure eyes. Also check fit often as loose lenses may not provide enough oxygen, promote bacteria growth or pop out easily. Properly insert and remove lenses by handling only the edges.
Take Lenses Out Before Sleeping or Napping
The recommended guidelines are to remove contact lenses for at least 6 continuous hours daily. During sleep, dust particles may collect under lenses increasing infection risks from lack of oxygen flow.
Give Your Eyes a Break with Glasses Periodically
Allowing eyes an occasional rest from contacts improves comfort long-term. Some opt to alternate contacts with prescription glasses day-to-day. Others set aside one day weekly as a no contacts day.
Additional Hygiene Tips
Thoroughly wash and rinse hands before handling lenses to prevent oil and germs collecting on them. Change lens cases every 1-3 months as they harbor bacteria over time. And see your eye doctor annually not just for updated prescriptions, but also to check the health of your eyes as lens wear does carry risks if not properly managed.
